Navigating the job shift: Automation and the Future of Work

In today’s fast-changing world, many worry that automation, especially with machine learning, might take away their jobs. It’s true that some jobs will disappear, but new ones will also pop up. Machine learning can analyze data and make decisions, like in customer service or predicting machine failures.

High Risk Jobs

However, this does not mean that there will be fewer jobs than before. Automation will take over some jobs but also create or increase the need for other jobs. The jobs that are at high risk are those that require the least amount of human cognitive function, for example, data entry and many analytical jobs. Jobs that are considered safe are the ones that require human creativity and emotional understanding. Two examples are therapists and marketers for companies. This is not to say that automation will not play a huge role in making those jobs easier for those individuals.

Job Shift

The impact of this shift depends on how much we trust AI and how advanced it becomes. The rate at which the job shift increases seems to be directly correlated to the development and trust we place on AI.

To handle this shift, we need to help workers learn new skills and adapt. The number of jobs available for humans may not change, but the variety that is available may change. As time goes on, the importance and demand for IT professionals should increase dramatically. Lifelong learning is key.

People Mostly Impacted

The interesting and maybe scary part for some is those who are caught in the middle of the job shift. An individual who is middle-aged, too young for retirement, and potentially too old to relearn a whole new profession will struggle. It’s understood that once the transition period is over, everything should stabilize and return to “normal”.

Conclusion

While automation may change the job market, if we handle it right, it can lead to a better future where humans and machines work together for everyone’s benefit. Change can be nerve-racking and cause uncertainty, but that doesn’t mean it will be bad change.

If jobs are becoming easier, does that mean wages go down as well? That could be a whole other blog post…
